The very point of SWEP’s brazed plate heat exchangers is to significantly lower energy usage. By connecting to E.ON’s revolutionary ectogrid™ system, the Landskrona site furthers sustainability, putting waste heat to good use at their own premises and neighboring properties.
Committed to being carbon-neutral by 2030, SWEP has a lifecycle perspective starting with creating more from less also throughout the manufacturing process. The process which consumes most electricity in SWEP’s manufacturing sites is the heating of the brazing furnaces. The Landskrona plant, in collaboration with the energy company E.ON, have been investigating ways of capturing the heat energy released during this process, and using it for heating nearby industrial buildings. This will reduce the energy that is used to heat premises in the neighborhood and also lower the energy needs of SWEP’s cooling towers. The pilot phase of the ectogrid™ system is due to be completed in spring 2021.
Saving and sharing
The patented ectogrid™ system works on the same principle as ectothermic animals e.g. lizards, and adjusts its temperature thus balancing and optimizing how connected facilities use energy. Effectively using all available energy flows decreases pollution and energy consumption and helps fight climate change. For SWEP, the waste heat will be reused for the site’s heating and hot water and cut energy purchases by approximately 75–80 percent. Still there will be enough excess heat to allows properties in the vicinity to be connected to the ectogrid™ system.
– Knowing that others can use our waste energy feels great and is a strategic sustainability measure. At SWEP we continuously investigate opportunities to reduce our own and our customers’ carbon dioxide emissions. With the ectogrid™ system we practice what we preach, says Fredrik Nordbladh, Engineering Manager at SWEP Landskrona.
SWEP Landskrona
First industrial plant
SWEP is the first industrial plant to be connected to the ectogrid™ system. As a long-term collaboration it enables more renewable energy use, replacing fossil fuels and combustion. Fully utilized the system can reduce the need for new energy by 80 percent and cut costs by 20 percent. The beauty of the solution also that only one thermal grid is needed as it serves several purposes – heating, cooling, storage and flexibility.
